What You Can Do

You’re the only health-care professional that has daily contact with your students. So it’s important for you to raise awareness of meningococcal disease. Here are some ideas:

  • Send an e-mail or educational materials to teachers and parents with a link to this Web site
  • Send educational materials with report cards
  • Host an in-school vaccination clinic
  • Use office visits as an opportunity to warn students about the disease, its symptoms, and how it spreads
  • Encourage annual physicals
  • Monitor the news for outbreaks in your area
  • Be on the lookout for symptoms when students come to your office
  • Offer to speak about meningococcal meningitis at Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings
  • Promote vaccination every chance you get
